JAN 16, 2019 WAWA: “Heading East to Break the Curse!”

I read that 80% of individual’s new year’s resolutions are broken by January 14th of that “new year”.  Some might refer to that as the “New Year’s Resolution Curse“!  So, I purposely set up our first WAWA run of the year a couple days past that date!  So, if you show up tomorrow, you’re in a unique group of twenty-percent-ers!

Planning a steady run tomorrow to get us back towards our running groove.  Just under 4.0 miles through Eastover neighborhood.  Your main running markers will be running “out” Hempstead and running “back” along Museum.  We’ll cut through Sherwood to Colville to enter Eastover.

RUN ROUTE IS HERE

Weather temps are planned to be hovering around 32 degrees so dress appropriately.  And it’s pretty dark that time of the morning, so don’t forget reflective gear and/or headlamps.  We’ll get warmed up fairly quickly on the route!

See you outside the Cornwell Center at 5:45 am ready to go!

DEC 12, 2018 WAWA: “Light Run on a Chilly Morning!”

This week marks the final “formal” WAWA run of the year.  There’s always a chance for a pop-up run or two before we wrap up 2018.  But this Wednesday is the last planned workout.

As such, we’ll be running our annual “light” run, taking in the Christmas lights in the Myers Park neighborhood, primarily on Picardy Place and Hillside Avenue.  And, yes, we will do a few hill repeats on Hillside before heading back to the Cornwell Center.  5 repeats to be exact!  Total run distance is just under 4.5 miles.

Planned route is at this LINK.

Temps will be dry but brisk!  But you’ll be so dazzled by the lights that the temperatures won’t matter.  Forecast calls for upper 20’s at 6 am ET so plan accordingly.  This is always a great time, wrapping up the WAWA year and hearing a Christmas devotional message.  Tomorrow’s message will call to mind “following your North Star“.

Meet outside the Cornwell Center at 5:45 am (or inside the main lobby if you’re a few minutes early).

See you in the morning!

DEC 5, 2018 WAWA: “Track and Trail Run”

We’ve got a great run planned for this week!  Easy jog from Cornwell Center to the AG Middle School track, following Roswell Road, to Colony, then to the track.  After the planned track interval workout, we’ll take a different route back, following Runnymede (briefly), then along the Briar Creek Greenway trail, back out to Colony, then back along Roswell to the Cornwell Center.

Planned distance is between 4.5 – 5.0 miles, depending on individual intervals on the track.

Weather will be crisp and dry.  Mid 30’s for temps with sunrise at 7:16 am.  Plan accordingly!

Meet inside Cornwell Center lobby at 5:45 am, ready to go!

See you then!

Related note….NEXT Wednesday will be our last WAWA of the year, where we’ll do our annual “light run”, taking in the holiday lights along Picardy Place and Hillside Avenue.

NOV 28, 2018 WAWA: “Fire and Ice Run”

Colder temps in Charlotte this week….and I don’t you to shy away from this week’s planned run.  We’re hitting the enclosed stairwell at Queens University….with a little bit outdoors.  The “FIRE” portion of the workout is running once, twice or three times up and down the seven floor parking deck.  Then, the “ICE” portion is running in the alley way just outside the entrance to the stairwell.  We’ve done this before.  Challenging but “do-able” workout.

Here’s the details:

-Meet outside the Cornwell Center ready to go at 5:45 am.

-Easy jog over to Queens, across the street from the Cornwell Center.

-First Set:  Up/Down stairwell, then down and back once in the alley.

-Second Set:  Up/Down stairwell twice, then down and back twice in the alley.

-Third Set:  Three times up/down and three times down and back.

-Fourth Set:  Back to two’s.

-Fifth Set:  Back to one’s.

Now, here’s the challenging part.  Temps at 6 am will be upper 20’s but will feel like lower 20’s with the wind.  That’s the outside temp, so we’ll be fine in the stairwell.  And the alley is relatively short.  We can do this!

Sunrise is at 7:12 am.

See you in the morning!

NOV 14, 2018 WAWA: “Five Times Up BBQ Hill”

Back to Hill Repeats this week!  Running up one of our favorite hills here in Charlotte…one that I’ve affectionately named “BBQ Hill” because of the smell of smoked pork and chicken you can smell along the route behind Park Road Shopping Center coming from Midwood Smokehouse!  Five times up and down the hill.  Picturesque route, if only it were daylight….that will take us along the Greenway before getting to the hill.  All told, we’ll cover just over 5 miles for this week’s workout!

Brisk morning but no rain in the forecast!  Mid 40’s and dry.  Wear something reflective.  Sunrise will be at 6:58 am.

-From QRW, we’ll head out East Blvd to Dilworth Road EAST.

-Take Dilworth Road EAST towards Latta Park.

-Run counter-clockwise around the Park, then exit along Dilworth Road WEST.

-Get back on East Blvd, heading towards QRW.

-Follow QRW uphill to Wellesley Ave. then back to the Cornwell Center

OCT 31, 2018 WAWA: “Spooky Hill Repeats!”

In past years, I’ve done Halloween-themed WAWAs that involved pumpkins.  Stepping things up this year.  No more pumpkins.  Instead, I’ve picked out a scary hill on Forest Park Drive (near Freedom Park) for a great Hill Repeats workout!

We’ll climb the hill six times!  Each climb is about 0.15 mile, but fairly steep.  Steep but do-able!

Here’s the general workout:

-Easy jog from Cornwell Center along Princeton Ave to Forest Park Drive.  (Base of the hill.)

-6 hill repeats up the incline

-Easy-to-Moderate jog back to the Cornwell Center, along Cumberland, then East Blvd, then up Radcliff before heading back “home”.

Total planned mileage is about 4.5 miles.

Here’s a map of the planned route.

Weather will be mid-40’s in the morning with a slight breeze.  Sunrise is not until 7:36 am so plan on bright, reflective gear, headlamps, etc.

Meet outside the Cornwell Center at 5:45 am ready to go!  It will be a great run/workout!

“Michael Lenhart” will be there!  “Michael Myers”…..will not!
