JULY 18, 2018 WAWA: “Continuing the Summer Stretch Slow-down”

Last week’s focus on stretching and recovery was welcomed with great reviews, so we are going to continue with one more week of the same.  Meet at the Cornwell Center shortly before 5:45 am for the “Strength & Stretch” class.  Non Cornwell members can ask for a Guest pass at the front desk (so long as you haven’t used one already this year).

We’re planning to be back on the roads next week, easing back into our running schedule.

July 11, 2018 WAWA: “Stretching our Legs…..and arms, and neck, and back, and….”

It’s been a couple weeks since we’ve ran as a group, and I noticed during today’s boot camp class that several folks are feeling a little bit “tight”.  Injuries can create havoc to our weekly runs…so I’m taking us down a different path, figuratively speaking, this week and encouraging WAWA participants to join me for the 5:45 am “Stretch & Strength” class in the Cornwell Center’s yoga studio.

If you are not a Cornwell member and want to participate, please check in at the front desk and sign up for a Guest Pass.

After this week, we’re back on the streets….but this week, I want to get many familiar with the basics of proper stretching before, during and after workouts.  Think of it as an investment towards many more WAWA’s ahead!

JUN 13, 2018 WAWA: “Half-Dozen AND then One More!”

Time for some hill repeats into our weekly run rotation!  Blowing off the dust from a workout we did on Dec 31st last year….and it was a very COLD morning that day!  Tomorrow morning won’t quite be a complete opposite end of the temperature spectrum, but it will be much warmer than it was back in December.

Morning temps expected to be around 67 degrees, mostly cloudy but no chance of rain.  Sunrise is planned for 6:10 am.

Half-dozen hill repeats on tap for the morning, about a mile into our route.  And those six babies will equal two miles by the time we’re done!  Quarter mile uphill; quarter mile downhill.  Six times!

Then the final mile and a half will take us back to the Cornwell Center, with a steady climb the last three-quarters of a mile!

JUN 6, 2018 WAWA: “Crossword Puzzle Run….2 down, and 3 up!”

You might think the title of this week’s run sounds more like a crossword puzzle than a workout:  “Two down, then Three up”!  Actually….I’ve mapped out nearly a perfect 5-mile route that goes gradually downhill for two miles, then gradually uphill for the final three miles!

Part of the route will take us along the Briar Creek Greenway behind Myers Park high school.  Once exiting the greenway, we’ll travel around AG Middle School, before taking Colony Road back towards our starting point.

Great weather in the morning:  65 degrees with zero chance of rain.  Sunrise is at 6:10 am, about half-way through our run!

MAY 30, 2018 WAWA: “Who’s Ready for Some Stairs??”

Bringing back one of my favorite workouts this week, since it’s been a long time coming!….STAIRS!

Meet outside the Cornwell Center at 5:45 am ready to go.  We’re going to tackle the stairs over at Queens University, just across the street.  Lots of stairs….and a beautiful “sunrise” view from atop one of the parking decks….hopefully!

Weather tomorrow will be more of the same we’ve seen the last few days here in Charlotte:  Overcast in the morning, with a minor chance of any precipitation.  Upper 60’s for temps.  Sunrise is at 6:12 am ET.

MAY 23, 2018 WAWA: “Surprise, Surprise, Surprise…!”

I hope I’m not really dating myself by referencing one of Gomer Pyler’s more famous lines from the Andy Griffith Show.  It’s really a play on words….as it relates to our planned run route for this week.  You’ll recall that I’ve asked for Burt Phillips’ input more often lately on our routes…especially when we’re running through Eastover.  Such is the case again this week….and I won’t know the details until the morning.  And that means, we’ll all be surprised in the morning.

All I can say is that our route will be around 4.5 miles, give or take.  Last week we made a point to realize the humidity and will adjust our pace as needed.

Weather should be great this Wednesday morning; Temp will be in lower 70’s with humidity around 85%.  No rain expected during the run and sunrise is at 6:14 am.

MAY 16, 2018 WAWA: “Morning Mint Run”

We’re heading back to the Eastover neighborhood this week, which means we’ll journey close to the Mint Art Museum (most likely).  Burt Phillips will lead the run; Mike will provide the end of run devotional.

Meet outside the Cornwell Center, ready to go at 5:45 am.  Distance will be 4.0 + miles.  Recall that since last week’s WAWA, we’ve entered a “build phase” in our running workouts for the next several weeks.  Meaning, we’re adding distance to the runs gradually each week.

Temps will be upper 60’s at run start.  Slight chance of rain but otherwise will be overcast.
