NOV 14, 2018 WAWA: “Five Times Up BBQ Hill”

Back to Hill Repeats this week!  Running up one of our favorite hills here in Charlotte…one that I’ve affectionately named “BBQ Hill” because of the smell of smoked pork and chicken you can smell along the route behind Park Road Shopping Center coming from Midwood Smokehouse!  Five times up and down the hill.  Picturesque route, if only it were daylight….that will take us along the Greenway before getting to the hill.  All told, we’ll cover just over 5 miles for this week’s workout!

Brisk morning but no rain in the forecast!  Mid 40’s and dry.  Wear something reflective.  Sunrise will be at 6:58 am.

NOV 7, 2018 WAWA: “Lotta Latta Run”

Heading back to one of my favorite run routes this week; Latta Park, nestled in the Dilworth neighborhood.

Here’s the general run route:

-From the Cornwell Center, we’ll exit right, then run down Radcliffe Ave towards Queens Road West (QRW).

-From QRW, we’ll head out East Blvd to Dilworth Road EAST.

-Take Dilworth Road EAST towards Latta Park.

-Run counter-clockwise around the Park, then exit along Dilworth Road WEST.

-Get back on East Blvd, heading towards QRW.

-Follow QRW uphill to Wellesley Ave. then back to the Cornwell Center

Distance is approximately 4.7 miles.  CLICK FOR ROUTE MAP

Moderate to easy pace planned.  Weather will be a balmy 48 degrees with no rain in forecast.  Sunrise is at 6:52 am.  Still need to wear reflective gear!

OCT 31, 2018 WAWA: “Spooky Hill Repeats!”

In past years, I’ve done Halloween-themed WAWAs that involved pumpkins.  Stepping things up this year.  No more pumpkins.  Instead, I’ve picked out a scary hill on Forest Park Drive (near Freedom Park) for a great Hill Repeats workout!

We’ll climb the hill six times!  Each climb is about 0.15 mile, but fairly steep.  Steep but do-able!

Here’s the general workout:

-Easy jog from Cornwell Center along Princeton Ave to Forest Park Drive.  (Base of the hill.)

-6 hill repeats up the incline

-Easy-to-Moderate jog back to the Cornwell Center, along Cumberland, then East Blvd, then up Radcliff before heading back “home”.

Total planned mileage is about 4.5 miles.

Weather will be mid-40’s in the morning with a slight breeze.  Sunrise is not until 7:36 am so plan on bright, reflective gear, headlamps, etc.

Meet outside the Cornwell Center at 5:45 am ready to go!  It will be a great run/workout!

OCT 17, 2018 WAWA: “North – South Duke Mansion Run”

This week’s run-focused WAWA takes us “north” of the Cornwell Center, then back “south” before eventually getting back “home”.  The total distance is 4.7 miles.  Easy paced, group run.  We’ll circle past the Duke Mansion about 2.5 miles into the run before heading back south around portions of the Booty Loop.

Total climbing elevation along the route is 198 ft.

Max. elevation is 764 ft.

Weather temp will be around 65 degrees, with about a 40% chance of rain.  Sunrise isn’t until 7:32 am and it’s been pretty dark in the morning lately…..so plan accordingly!

OCT 10, 2018 WAWA: “Dodging Hurricane Mike…..”

Not a joke….the hurricane that’s brewing off the Florida Panhandle (with rain predicted to hit the Charlotte area by mid-week) is called “Michael”!  Now, I’ve been called a lot of names before…Coach Mike, Tri Mike, West Point Mike….but never “Hurricane”…..

I think we’ll be safe at 5:45 am ET on Wednesday morning this week…. 55% chance of some light rain.  And knowing the the weatherman is always correct….I’m planning an outdoor run!

It’s been a while since we’ve done an Octopus (or Spider) Run so that’s the focus, or something very similar.  Meet outside the Cornwell Center at 5:45 am ready to go.  We’ll have an easy jog over the intersection of Queens Road / Hopedale Avenue / Granville Road.  From that point, we’ll branch out several “out and backs” along the legs that channel from that intersection.

Plan on 3.5 to 4.0 miles of distance.  Great routes!

OCT 3, 2018 WAWA: “Early Fall Track Workout”

I was telling a friend that I was ready for a track workout this week, given the crisp mornings lately.  Halloween will be here before we know it!

So….outdoor track workout it IS for tomorrow morning!

Temps will be a cool 65 degrees in the morning!  Great temps for running!  Dark outside so bring some reflective gear for our run “to-from” the track.

Here’s the workout:

-Easy jog from Cornwell Center to AG Middle School track.

Route:

Wellesley Avenue to Roswell Road
Roswell Road all the way to Colony Road
Colony Road past Myers Park High School
Turn right into gate for AG Middle School track just past Selwyn Elementary School
Distance = 1.75 miles

-Main Workout at the track:

Warm Up Set: 1 lap around track at moderate pace

Main Set:  6 laps around track at 5k race pace
-Sprint the straight-aways; jog the curves
-Negative split each straight-away from the previous one
-Participants will sprint a total of 12 straight-aways

Cool Down Set:  1 lap around track at moderate pace
Distance = 2.0 miles

-Easy jog back to the Cornwell Center

Same route as before, only in reverse
Distance = 1.75 miles

TOTAL workout distance = 5.5 miles

Meet outside the Cornwell Center, ready to go at 5:45 am.  See you then!

SEP 26, 2018 WAWA: “Booty Loop with a Sterling Twist!”

Many around Charlotte know about the famous “booty loop” around Myers Park.  Our workout this week will generally follow that route, except we’ll expand out slightly along Sterling Road.  Don’t worry….that extension only adds about a half-mile to the normal Booty Loop run.

The extension adds Sterling Road and Queens Road East to our run.

No problems!  Planned distance is 3.8 miles.

Meet outside the Cornwell Center at 5:45 am.  We’ll step off shortly thereafter.  Easy pace.

Weather will be cooler; temps in upper 60’s…with no chance of rain.  Sunrise is at 7:15 am so plan accordingly.
